Which smart lock is best for an Airbnb?
For an eligible US or Canadian listing with a compatible deadbolt door, start with Schlage Encode Smart WiFi Deadbolt BE489WB for a replacement lock, or a correctly configured Yale Approach Wi-Fi-and-keypad kit if you need to retain the existing exterior lock. Yale Assure Lock 2 with Wi-Fi is another documented replacement option. These are workflow-based research recommendations, not a tested ranking of security or reliability.
The best smart lock for Airbnb must fit both the door and the hosting process. A fingerprint reader, smart-home logo or keypad alone does not establish automatic reservation codes. Verify the exact model, its internet connection and the integration used for your listing before ordering.
First check Airbnb eligibility and the integration route
Airbnb currently limits its direct smart-lock connection to listings in the United States and Canada. Its supported brands are Schlage, Yale and August, with specific models and configurations. A third-party property management system (PMS) may offer a different route; do not assume the direct feature works worldwide. Check Airbnb’s current compatible-lock list.
For the direct connection, Airbnb generates and shares individual reservation codes; they activate at check-in and are removed after checkout. Eligible hosts can connect one lock per listing. That matters if guests must pass several locked entrances: plan access to every door rather than assuming one connection covers the building. How Airbnb’s connected-lock feature works.
If you already use a PMS, confirm the provider’s exact lock support and how it handles new bookings, changes, cancellations and code delivery. Airbnb says its PMS integration does not expose the lock’s real-time battery or connectivity status to Airbnb. Keep monitoring in the appropriate lock or management platform. Airbnb’s PMS guidance.
A shortlist based on the job the lock needs to do
| Candidate | Why consider it | Configuration to check | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Schlage Encode Smart WiFi Deadbolt BE489WB | Replacement deadbolt with built-in Wi-Fi and an exterior touchscreen | Encode Smart WiFi Deadbolt on Airbnb’s list; manufacturer specifies 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi | Requires a suitable deadbolt door and working network coverage |
| Yale Assure Lock 2 with Wi-Fi | Replacement lock with an integrated keypad or touchscreen | Exact Wi-Fi module or supported Connect bridge configuration | The Assure Lock 2 name alone does not identify the connectivity bundle |
| Yale Approach Lock with Wi-Fi + Keypad | Interior retrofit that retains the existing exterior deadbolt and keys | Compatible deadbolt, Yale Connect and separate supported keypad | Additional keypad and bridge must be installed and maintained |
Schlage Encode: a straightforward replacement candidate
Encode BE489WB combines the keypad and Wi-Fi connection in the lock, avoiding a separate plug-in Wi-Fi bridge. Schlage documents support for the Airbnb integration, a physical backup key and four AA alkaline batteries. Its standard door fit is 1⅜–1¾ in (35–45 mm) thick with a 2⅜ or 2¾ in backset. Check the door-preparation instructions before purchase; those dimensions do not establish compatibility with a mortise or multipoint mechanism. Schlage’s exact Encode specifications.
Do not confuse Encode with Schlage Connect, the Z-Wave model discussed in our Z-Wave lock guide. Airbnb also lists Encode Plus; our Encode Plus specification record covers that separate product. Choose extra ecosystem features only when your household needs them, rather than treating them as proof of better guest-code handling.
Yale Assure Lock 2: buy the connectivity configuration
Yale’s Airbnb page identifies supported Assure Lock 2 Wi-Fi-module versions and vacation-host bundles using a Connect Wi-Fi bridge. For this use case, buy the documented Wi-Fi configuration rather than an unspecified Bluetooth-only or Z-Wave listing. A bridge-based bundle and an internal-Wi-Fi version can share a family name while requiring different setup. Yale’s Airbnb configuration guidance · Assure Lock 2 Touchscreen with Wi-Fi product page.
Choose keyed or key-free hardware deliberately and record the actual alternative entry procedure. A fingerprint feature can suit a host, but guests still need a working reservation-access method; compare the credential choices in our fingerprint lock guide.
Yale Approach: when keeping the exterior hardware matters
Approach fits on the inside of a compatible existing deadbolt, retaining the outside hardware and keys. The cited Wi-Fi-and-Keypad bundle includes Yale Connect; the keypad is a separate device. Check the manufacturer’s mechanical compatibility guidance, bridge placement and keypad mounting before treating this as a simpler alternative. Yale Approach bundle details.
Stock varies by bundle, finish and region. The checked Assure Lock 2 and Approach product pages include out-of-stock messages alongside purchase controls, so we are not asserting immediate availability. Confirm the complete supported kit at an authorized local seller. Retaining a cylinder does not by itself establish landlord permission or suitability for a shared entrance.
Offline access: distinguish three different cases
A working offline lock is different from a lock with dead batteries. Airbnb’s backup documentation separates these situations:
- Reservation code already synchronized: its activation and expiration information is stored on the lock and can work offline while the lock remains usable.
- New or changed code cannot synchronize: a preloaded backup code may be shared. These codes have no preset expiration; removal needs the lock online, or manual removal if it stays offline.
- Dead batteries or broken keypad: another code does not restore entry. The guest needs the separate backup entry method.
Read Airbnb’s backup-code rules. Check that any used backup code has been removed after the stay. For upkeep, use our smart lock battery and backup-power guide; do not schedule battery changes around an unverified life estimate.
Commission the guest journey before relying on it
Use the official onboarding procedure, then verify the parts of the journey you intend to rely on. This is RobotMyHome’s practical handover checklist, not a claim that we tested the locks.
- Door fit: confirm the exact lock and hardware combination; make sure the bolt operates smoothly with the door closed.
- Connection: verify the selected lock or bridge has reliable Wi-Fi at its installed location.
- Reservation workflow: check how codes appear for existing and new reservations, and how time changes and cancellations are handled.
- Guest instructions: show the correct door and keypad, describe the lock/unlock action, and give a reachable contact.
- Recovery: document the backup entry method and assign someone who can respond locally.
- Turnover: check code removal, battery warnings and the physical door mechanism between stays.
Do not share a permanent master code as routine guest access. Keep staff access separate so a cleaner’s ongoing credential is not confused with a guest’s reservation window. Broader smart-home compatibility is a separate decision; our Matter lock guide explains ecosystem requirements.
How we selected these options
We screened official Airbnb support, manufacturer configuration and door-fit documents for explicit guest-code support, required accessories, retrofit versus replacement work, and recovery responsibilities. We favored a small set with explainable differences over a long list of loosely “Airbnb compatible” locks.
This guide does not compare forced-entry resistance, motor noise, measured battery endurance or real-world failure rates. It does not rank products by price, claim universal availability, or turn a protocol certification into proof of booking automation. A listing outside the documented region or with a different door mechanism requires a fresh compatibility decision.
Questions hosts ask
Can I use these direct Airbnb connections in Europe?
The documented direct feature is for US and Canadian listings. For another country, investigate a supported PMS or a clearly managed manual code process, checking the local lock model and service coverage. Do not import a North American lock on the assumption that the integration will follow it.
Do guests need a smart-lock app?
The documented direct workflow gives guests a keypad code through their Airbnb trip information. Select and commission the actual keypad configuration; a retrofit lock without its required keypad does not provide that journey.
Does a lock advertised for rentals automatically connect to Airbnb?
No. “Rental” can describe intended use or manual code scheduling. Check the exact product on Airbnb’s supported list or obtain explicit support from your PMS. Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Matter and Z-Wave names do not establish reservation integration.
